The Christopher McCollum Memorial Cup was presented by his parents to the William Keown Trust to honour the memory of their son. Christopher, from Bangor, who had Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and was fully confined to a wheelchair for most of his life sadly died in September 2001, aged almost 17. The cup is awarded to someone who makes a significant difference to the life of someone with a disability or illness and who is not be part of the family circle. The inspiration for the cup was in recognition of the wonderful friendship Christopher received from his life long special able-bodied best friend, called Christopher Hardy.

The two boys met each other at nursery school when they were three years of age. Christopher McCollum was not diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy until aged five but he knew within himself he had difficulty doing most things as easily as everyone else but he felt secure even then in his friend's company. They then went to different primary schools but still saw each other regularly even though Christopher McCollum gradually became more dependent on needing a wheelchair.

Christopher Hardy remained there for his friend and in many ways adapted to Christopher's way of life. Their friendship continued to grow into their teens, Christopher McCollum was an only child and to have a friend who was always there to do all the normal things such as going to the pictures, playing computer games, playing music, even playing football in the street, going on trips, improved his quality of life immensely.

Cup Winner

Ronan Murray of Limavady

Ronan has been friends with Conor for a number of years since he joined his form, they are in most classes together and also socialise together outside of school.  Ronan helps Conor to integrate more fully with his peers, he helps him get around the school and ensures that can gain access to necessary resources including books and computers.  Ronan’s generosity of spirit and selflessness is second to none.  He recently gave up the opportunity to attend a football trip in order to remain behind with Conor while all the other boys in the class were away.  The friendship of these two young men will truly stand the test of time
