Amy Woods of Castleblayney
The Haldane Butler Memorial Trophy award is given for courage and fortitude in the face of considerable suffering. Amy has never enjoyed full health, she has had restricted lung disease since infancy and has required numerous periods of hospitalisation for treatment; she still has to take numerous medications daily. As well as coping with her own illness Amy cared for her mother Fiona who had heart/lung disease and who sadly passed away in January. It was only after her death when Fiona’s personal diary was found that the extent of Amy’s care for her mother was truly realised. Amy is now attending school full time and is full integrated in all peer activities, she is presently rehearsing for the school play and is taking time to enjoy teenage pastimes including music, videos and fashion. Amy’s extended family are extremely proud of this plucky young lady whose courage, bravery, love and devotion is virtually beyond belief.
